Why Your Energy Is Blocking Sales (And How to Fix It Today)
Aug 06, 2026Here's a truth most sales advice skips right over: you can make a lot of money and a lot of impact in your business regardless of your audience size, foot traffic, or listenership. It's not about the quantity, it's about the quality. And one of the biggest things standing between you and more sales isn't your offer, your website, or your follower count. It's your energy. Today we're doing a vibe check on your business: how you might be preventing sales without realizing it, what you can do to make more of them, and how to stop leaving money on the table.

How One Bad Experience Loses a Customer for Good
In the fall of 2024, Nicole walked into the new Lululemon location in downtown Victoria, coffee in hand, ready to buy. She used to work for the company. She loves the clothing. And the experience was so bad: staff standing around planning their night out, nobody offering to help her or the women standing confused at the pant wall. She hasn't purchased a single thing from them since, and started exploring other brands entirely. Lululemon is a huge corporation and will survive losing one shopper. Here's the part that matters for you: if you're not a huge corporation, a few experiences like that can make or break your business.
Kaila had her own version recently. She approached a local business owner she knew, as the ideal client, ready to buy, opening the conversation warmly, and got shut down. No engagement, no connection, a feeling of being a burden. Her credit card was ready to come out, and she walked away instead. It turned out the owner was unhappy about a situation that had nothing to do with Kaila, but the customer standing in front of you doesn't know that. They just feel the energy and move on. People do not buy from someone who makes it seem like they owe you something.
Vibe Check #1: Your Energy Speaks Before You Do
Whether you're recording a podcast, writing a post, or standing in front of someone, the vibe gets to be high: enthusiasm, eye contact, openness. You'd be surprised how many subtle posts and reels give off entitlement, expectation, or "I've had a bad day, so you're all going down." Energy speaks way before you open your mouth, through your body language and your aura. As Roald Dahl put it, "If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams." Kaila kept that quote on her desk in her fundraising days, because cold calls made standing up, shoulders back, smiling, went better than calls made slumped at a desk waiting for the hang-up. And Nicole's mom always told her that as long as she could get in front of the person hiring, she'd get everything she wanted, because her energy would have them saying yes. Magnetic and open wins. Cold, uncertain, and entitled loses.
Vibe Check #2: Be the Solution, Generously
The second way to sell without a big audience is to be the person who solves problems, everywhere, all the time. Open the door for someone. Make the referral that helps two people at once. Show up early to support your friend's event. When generosity is just how you operate, it's natural in your business too. Here's your challenge: do one generous thing for someone today that you weren't planning to do, and then look at your business and ask where you can be the solution to a real gap.
Generosity also means sharing your story instead of gatekeeping. When we spoke at an event about the versions of us that were once in debt and didn't know how to build wealth, we pitched nothing. Afterwards, people lined up to say "me too" and "thank you," and then asked, on their own, "where can I learn more about working with you?" A sale can flow naturally from generosity precisely because there was no expectation attached to it.
Vibe Check #3: Actually Invite People In
The third piece is the one so many women skip: make the offer. Invite people in. "Do you want to work together? Do you want to join this program? I used to have terrible skin, this is why I created this, do you want to take a tube home?" You are responsible for your results. Not the person who set up the conversation, not the person who referred you. As the CEO, you're where the buck stops. So smile at the customers, as Kaila's grandfather would say, figure out how you can help, offer it, and give people the opportunity to buy.
How to Switch Your Energy When the Day Goes Sideways
You cannot fake energy. You can put on a fake smile, but your energy will still broadcast "I'm closed off." So if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed and you're opening the shop or hosting the call anyway, your responsibility is to actually shift it first: play the song that changes your mood, get outside for ten minutes, write a gratitude list. And if something pulls your energy mid-day, you can decide, as an emotionally regulated adult, to be present now and process later. This is not toxic positivity; if you truly need the moment, take it. But if you're going to be there anyway, don't leave sales on the table because of an attitude you have the power to shift.
Nicole lived the extreme version of this in Arizona. The day before a big planning day, she lost her engagement ring, got lost on a hike, and then learned her biological grandmother had passed away. She cried all night. She felt every bit of it. And the next morning, because creating the best year for our clients deserves the best energy, she processed the feelings and chose to be fully present. If you're going to do this, do it with your whole heart.
So the next time you have the opportunity to make a sale, which if you're an entrepreneur is probably today: smile, figure out how you can help, offer it, and let people buy.
