Am I Burnt Out or Just Outgrowing My Business? How to Tell

burnout business growth thank goodness it's monday [tgim] Aug 10, 2026

This one is for you if you've spent even one hour this summer feeling tired of your own business. Not tired of entrepreneurship in general, but tired of your particular business, the one you thought you were building on purpose. If you're dreading things that used to light you up, if you've caught yourself fantasizing about a sabbatical or scrolling job postings (don't lie, I know some of you have) and then feeling guilty about it, hello. You manifested this post. Everybody is calling that feeling burnout, because that's the word we all have. But today I'm going to call it something different, because I don't think most of you are actually burnt out. I think you're outgrowing something. And those two things need completely different medicine.

Burnout and Outgrowing Your Business Are Not the Same Thing

Let me be really clear first: burnout is real. Exhaustion is real. It's a health thing, it's your body, it's your nervous system waving the white flag and asking for rest. I'm not a medical professional, and I'm never going to tell you to push through if you are physiologically, biologically burnt out. If that's you, full stop, get support from someone who works with nervous system health.

But here's the woman I'm actually talking to. You took the vacation. You put it in the calendar. You tried the slow mornings, went for the massage, took a week off social. And you came back and the feeling was still there, sitting right where you left it. The vacation didn't fix it. Which means the problem you were solving for was never burnout. So what are you actually solving for?

In my understanding, burnout is depletion across the board. Everything feels heavy. Work feels heavy. Responding to that message feels heavy. Cooking dinner feels heavy, and cooking dinner has nothing to do with your business. Outgrowing your business is different because it's selective. You're bored. You're resistant to certain parts of your business. Certain things just don't spark joy anymore, but other things still do. That selectivity is the dead giveaway.

Three Self-Check Questions to Tell the Difference

Here's your little self-check. Pause here and journal it out if you need to.

First, is the heaviness everywhere, or only in specific corners of your business? Complete depletion points to burnout. "Where's the sparkle?" points to outgrowing.

Second, listen to what you complain about. Burnout sounds like "I cannot do this anymore. There is no way I can keep doing this." Outgrowing sounds like "I can't do it this way anymore." Those are two very different complaints. One wants out. The other is looking for another way, without burning it all down.

Third, burnout wants nothing. When you're truly burnt out and somebody asks what you want, the answer is "Nothing. Make it stop. Go away." But when you're outgrowing a version of yourself or your business, you do want something. You might not know what it is yet, or you might be afraid to admit it. That thing you keep dismissing as a distraction or shiny object syndrome? You might just be outgrowing the way you thought you were supposed to do this.

The Body Test, the Mask, and the Secret Pull

Now some reflection. Imagine doing this exact business, the exact way you're doing it now, for three or more years. Don't think about it. Feel it. What happens in your body when I say that? Your body answers so much faster than your brain, and your mind can play tricks on you, but your body is never going to lie.

Next: which parts of your week still feel truly like you, the person who built this business, and which parts feel like masking? If you're doing the thing, and you're competent at the thing, but the whole time there's a low hum of "this isn't how I want it to be, this isn't me anymore," pay attention to that hum.

And finally, what do you secretly keep getting drawn to that you keep dismissing? I can't tell you how many years I dismissed my own pull toward a microphone. In high school I wanted to move to LA and be on TV, or go to Broadway, and be somebody who gets to talk to a bunch of people. I told myself that wasn't real life, went and got the big girl job, became a teacher. And then in this business I discovered that the secret thing I wanted was exactly that: to talk into a microphone, to be front and center, to be well-known, to have something worth saying that people pay attention to. The longer I held that desire back, the longer the runway to the business I actually wanted. If something in your business keeps waving at you, it's probably the next version of your business saying hello.

The Six-Year Birthday Lunch That Cracked Everything Open

Let me tell you how this played out for us. On Monday, June 8th, our six-year business birthday, Kaila and I went out for lunch at The Empress. We ordered champagne. We got prawns. It was bougie and delicious, and something felt off. We got our nails done and it still felt off. This was supposed to be a big celebratory day, and we could each sense it in the other.

Then the conversation cracked wide open. We were so frustrated by the lag on a decision we'd been weighing since March of 2025. And we are fast movers. Every person who has ever worked with us says the same thing: it's hard to keep up with how fast you two move. So why were we stuck? Because saying yes would have meant admitting we'd outgrown the way we built this business. When we started, neither of us had kids. Now there are three between us. We had outgrown the versions of ourselves who could work endless hours, and we'd outgrown the machine we built: free week-long experiences leading into a small offer, live cash flow facilitation, all of it.

So we finally moved. We opened a six-month option for Aligned CEO Method for the women who told us a year-long commitment felt like too much before they knew and trusted us. We created Next Level, a mastermind we're beta testing for clients ready for bigger conversations about leading teams, investing, and scaling past their first milestones. We retired the five-day free events after six years. And here's my favorite part: the women who moved up to Next Level still come to all the Aligned CEO Method calls, because those conversations about sales, visibility, and identity still matter. July became a record cash-in-the-door month for us. Everything shifted when we finally shifted. The universe, God, source, whatever you believe in, delivers, but you have to go first. You jump, and then the net appears.

How to Evolve Your Business Without Burning It Down

So you've diagnosed it. You're not burnt out, you've outgrown something. Do you rebrand everything and archive your whole Instagram? No. Put down the lighter. Put down the matches. This is where I save you from a massive pendulum swing.

Instead, separate the current version of your business from the version you started, and decide what you want to keep and what feels expired. We kept Aligned CEO Method. We let go of the free event model. Then upgrade one area, and only one, so you actually know which lever made the difference. Ask yourself: what would the current me build here? Not the version of you from three years ago who was too scared to charge that or be seen like that. The you of today, with evidence and capacity.

And then, name the something you want. Pick one person you love and trust, your coach, your business bestie, somebody in your mastermind, and tell them the secret out loud. Then start building a little plan around it, so it's not so secretive anymore. Stop saying "maybe next year" or "maybe when I have it all together." If it's the thing you really want, build it into this version of you and your business now.

We go so much deeper on this in our book, which is out in September, and when you pre-order you're automatically in our book club so we can walk through this work together. And come tell me in the DMs on Instagram: what part of yourself or your business are you outgrowing? Have you been misdiagnosing it as burnout this whole time? I hope this named something you've been feeling all summer. Have a great week, and I'll be back next Monday.
